THE BANDANA DAY 2012

Every year thousands of South Africans are diagnosed with leukaemia and other life threatening blood disorders. To survive from this disease, people rely on bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant.

Brainchild of the Sunflower Fund, the bandana idea was launched on 1 September 2003. Furthermore, the NGO is urging all South African’s to support National Bandana Day on 12 October by buying an official bandana for only R 20 at their local Pick n Pay. All funds raised will go towards assisting The Sunflower Fund in increasing the South African Bone Marrow Registry. The Registry assists in finding 40,000 donors representative of the South African demographics and ideally tissue-typed to a DR level. It endorsed by Archbishops Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Patron of the Sunflower Fund, and also the minister of education.
