                                    BUSINESS ETIQUETTE IN THE WORKPLACE

All over the world, doing business with international clients requires more than just financial capacity. A lack of knowledge about a customer’s culture can lead to misunderstanding, frustration and potential embarrassment. The building of successful business relationships is a vital part of any international venture, and such relationships rely heavily on an understanding of each partner’s expectations and intentions. Each culture has its own particularity when it comes to social business relations. As a representative of your company, you want to ensure that you make the best impression on potential clients and that means having at least a basic familiarity with the customs and practices of the region. The following lines are intended to point you in the right direction for creating lasting partnerships with international clients. It should be important to highlight that there as many ways to do business as their countries to do business with; here are basics things that need to be observed while minding your global P’s.
  • HOW TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP
When you're interacting with people from around the world, it is important to understand the culture and etiquette of the people around you. By taking the time to learn a bit about how people do business in other countries, you'll be better at building good professional relationships.
  • UNDERSTANDING THE HAND SHAKE
Around the world, business people use the handshake for greeting and meeting others businesses. In countries with large populations, such as Kenya and South Africa, you can expect European style handshakes from the white people you'll meet. In the Muslim countries of northern Africa, you may find men holding handshakes so long that they become a handhold. Do not be offended. This is a common practice.

Within any organisation, the responsibility of leader toward his employees is not easy task. Some entrepreneurs failed their position because they do not have enough skills to treat employee fairly, not only in terms of salary and other forms of compensation, but also in how that employee is involved in the daily function of the business. Most of the time, no policies and rules have been established properly in order to guide the employees when they are working. Communication between the manager and its employees is not flowing horizontally, because not enough effective medium of communication are used to share information one to another. To avoid failure in company if I will become the boss, I will encourage feedback, innovation, and creativity so employees feel genuinely engaged. I will create an environment of integrity, trust, and respect to make absolutely certain that everyone is treated fairly, regardless of the differences they may have. I will seek continuous improvement; I will control and co-ordinate staff effectively; I will engage in and enjoy crisis management; I will focus on customers and know how to improve business performance; I will conduct meetings efficiently.

Two people come out of a building and into a story

One day I saw two people come out of a building and walk around the city bowl. It’s was an old man and young lady. From my first impression I assumed that they were a couple. Bad feeling came to my mind and asks myself why this kind of relationship exists into the society? I assumed that they were together for a purpose of financial support. Few minutes later I joined a friend of mine at Mc Donald. We had a conversation about old people who have a relationship with young people. Suddenly I saw the same two people standing on the queue to order the food. They were laughing and smiling each other as lovers.  My friend left me for a while and greets the couple and she came back to me. Very soon I learned from my friend that two people I saw in the street are only her cousin and his colleague. There is no relationship between them. Sometimes, our thoughts about a specific situation can lead us to bad answer.

How to present the perfect audio visual presentation?

In this day and age, you need to use audio visual media to get attention of your audience. You need to create a simple presentation or a full on advertising campaign, to show people what kind of products and services does your industry offer to their potential clients. An audio visual presentation is benefit in term of sight and hearing. It can produce the best effect on the audience.

Here are some fundamentals about audio visual presentation.

·         Power point
An audio-visual could provide you, the audio by speaking, and supplements it with a series of images projected onto a screen, either from a slide projector, or from a computer connected to a digital projector using software such as Powerpoint.

·         Slides
Projected Slides are beneficial and very professional to large audiences, when you feel the need to present the goods that your company offers. They also allow colour photographs that may be very helpful in your presentation.  Slides are best used when a standard presentation is needed such as sales presentations or information that does not change often.

·         Flip Chart
You can use flip charts for on-the-spot creation of visuals. This is quite helpful in interacting with your audience, clarifying information in more detail, or recording ideas generated during meetings. If you are working with a large audience, however, flip charts are not good. Their size makes them less portable than slides or overhead transparencies.

Why money and business?

Many business owners experience the problem of financing when starting or expanding a business. Some of them make the mistake of beginning with too little money. This has being demonstrated by shortage of capital. Eventually, starting your own business is never easy, but it can be very rewarding and emotional. With hard work, experience and knowledge your business can provide you enough money as well as personal satisfaction.

There are so many things to pay for, both big and small. You have to find a place to run your business in and pay for it, find employees and pay for them, order equipment and pay for it,  pay for using the utilities of the building you run your business in,  pay for supplies, you have to advertise and pay for advertising.
So what to do? You can possibly get the money by asking for a loan from a government organisation or a bank. When asking for capital, your application must be professional and show all the information required. All these things add up to be a lot of money. Hopefully you make enough off selling your products or services to be able to cover these costs. If you do not make enough profit, your business will probably not stay around for long

How hard is it to follow instructions?

At the beginning, when a supervisor asks his employees to perform a specific task in order to achieve the organisation’s goals, it’s not always clear in people’s minds. Some of them do not properly understand what is expected of them, because of the language factor. From my own experience, I was working as PR assistant in the department of Interior Design at CPUT. I failed the instructions given by my supervisor because she spoke too fast and the way I perceived the message wasn’t in accordance to what she expected from me. For instance, if she asked me to supply information for the exact size of drawing boards through the different companies, I found it hard because of calculation. So, she complained about my work and did not find me capable to represent the department of Interior Design. But as hard worker I always try my best to find out solutions.
